Rev.
Louis Mueller was born on February 22, 1876 in Schleswig-Holstein,
Germany. As a small child, he came to America with his parents and spent his
youth in Canada. In his early teens he was sent to our Springfield seminary in
the United States. He successfully passed all his examinations in 1898. His
first call was to the state of Michigan. His obituary states that he worked
for ten years in various places in Michigan. Trinity’s records indicate very
little about Rev. Mueller, as he spent such a short time with us, from late 1899
to September 1901. At that time he was given a peaceful release to accept a
call to Apena, Michigan. He is credited with organizing a young peoples’
society and a choir. In 1900, Rev. Mueller married Mis Bertha Wiese in Detroit.
The Lord blessed them with seven children. Three of his children preceded him
in death.
His last call was to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church,
Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, where he served about ten years.
Pastor Mueller’s obituary, which appeared in the December
17, 1918 issue of Der Lutheraner, states that two of his children died of
“nerve” fever some weeks before he died of the same affliction. After
confessing his faith and partaking of the body and blood of his Lord and praying
the prayer, “I am tired and go to rest, etc.”, he closed his eyes on November 4,
1901, and slumbered peacefully into eternity.
On November 6, 1918, his body was laid to rest. Many
Pittsburgh pastors took part in his funeral. Pastor Lauterbach preached the
funeral sermon and Pastor Horst officiated at the grave. The latter also wrote
the obituary for Der Luteraner.
